Author says accidental deaths are defined by money and power

The 21st Show and Illinois Public Media speak with author Jessie Singer discussing her 2022 book There Are No Accidents: The Deadly Rise of Injury and Disaster-Who Profits and Who Pays the Price. This podcast discusses the way that race, class, and privilege all predicate our likelihood of not just being seriously injured, but killed, by what is deemed no more than an ‘accident.’ Singer problematizes how we define accidents, positing we halt usage of the term ‘accident’ altogether until we further interrogate whether intention (versus outcome) is all that matters when it comes to deadly scenarios. Singer and the show’s host Brian Mackey never shy away from discussing how race implicates the way willful ignorance gets rewritten as ‘accident’ time and time again, making this a chilling but important dialogue to follow.

Frantz Fanon, Racism, and the Alienation of Reason

What’s Left of Philosophy? discusses the prolific Black scholar Frantz Fanon and his lifetime grappling with 20th Century existence as a racialized and radicalized thinker. Fanon drew inspiration and deeply studied many of the leaders and figures most pertinent to Black struggles towards liberation and freedom across continents. Listen to this crash course on historical African and Black changemakers that doesn’t skimp when dissecting the layers and nuance shaping this period in time.

Poverty is an intentional genocide.

Ismatu Gwendolyn’s podcast Threadings is based on their clinical social work career, Black feminism, love studies, and childhood experiences of impoverishment. This episode is captivating, informative, radical, and socio-culturally necessary- as are all of the episodes.
